A prayer I wrote thirty years ago is the foundation of my art for the last decade. Long before the Flood drawings or the Deluge paintings came Earth Prayer, written in an innocent time when we still thought the earth was forever, unchanging. Now, in this time of climate crisis, this prayer honors our covenant with the Earth as we try to save it.

I wrote this In the middle of the night in Houston after attending a talk by art critic Lucy Lippard. I illustrated the prayer later with pen and ink drawings, and invented my own lettering:  the "Y"s, for example, I drew as figures with arms raised in prayer. It was printed black on white paper, and white on black tee-shirts – the college student's choice in art.  Many religious and non-religious people have loved this prayer. It sounds wonderful in French. I wish everyone knew it.
